Gem Squash

Description

Gem squash are a winter squash popular in South Africa, among other locations. There are few opportunities to purchase fresh gem, or rolet, squash in America so we thought we would make some of our crop available to the public.

We will, when the crop allows, make the squash available during the Hallelujah Orchard open hours, as well as selling them online.

If you are unfamiliar with the gem, or rolet, squash, it is similar in texture to spaghetti squash although not as course, and probably “sweeter”.

One person would typically eat a whole gem squash on their own, being a little smaller than the size of a softball, or a little larger than a cricket ball. You really can eat the whole squash, except for the nut where it attaches to the vine.

You can steam or nuke the squash to where the skin is soft like paper, in most cases, and then just add a little butter and salt and pepper.

NOTE: Our gem squash weigh anything from about 6 ounces up to 13 ounces (so far) each but most seem to be in the 8 ounce range which is why we picked that as a chargeable weight. If you set the quantity to how many squash you would like to buy, the system will calculate and charge based on an 8 ounce squash at $2 so 5 squash at $2 each will be $10 plus shipping. If you want to order by weight, leave the quantity at 1 and change the weight to however many ounces you want which will calculate a charge based on .25c per oounce and we will round up or down as appropriate. Note also that shipping, USPS, is in addition. Thanks.
